02The lawn year

When your yard needs what.

Most St. Louis lawns are tall fescue, a cool-season grass. It grows hardest in spring and fall, slows down in the summer heat, and rests over winter. Here is the general timing, and the services that fit each season.

Spring · March to May

Wake the yard up.

Clear out what winter left behind, sharpen the bed edges, and lay fresh mulch before everything leafs out. Spring is also the time for weed control, new plantings, and new sod for bare spots. Mowing starts as the grass greens up.

Services that fit

  • Spring cleanup
  • Bed edging and weeding
  • Mulch installation
  • Weed control
  • Plant installations
  • Sod installation
  • Grass cutting

Summer · June to August

Keep it sharp through the heat.

Fescue slows down in July and August, so steady mowing at the right height matters most. Beds need regular weeding, and many shrubs are ready for shaping once their spring growth is done. Late August opens the window for aeration and over-seeding.

Services that fit

  • Grass cutting
  • Bed edging and weeding
  • Shrub pruning
  • Core aeration, late Aug
  • Over-seeding, late Aug

Fall · September to November

The season that matters most.

Late summer into early fall is the best window of the year to aerate and over-seed a fescue lawn, and fertilizing now builds strong roots for next spring. Then the leaves come down, and it is time for leaf cleanup.

Services that fit

  • Core aeration
  • Over-seeding
  • Sod installation
  • Fertilization
  • Fall leaf cleanup
  • Plant installations
  • Mulch refresh

Winter · December to February

Rest, then plan ahead.

Tall fescue goes dormant over winter, so the lawn itself needs little. Use the quiet months to plan a landscape design and line up a spring cleanup, fresh mulch, and new plantings. Have brush or another job in mind? Call or text to ask what fits your property and when.
